Book a consultationDo I need a lawyer for an uncontested divorce in Alberta?
It isn't legally required, but a lawyer makes sure your paperwork is correct and that parenting, support and property issues are properly settled first. Errors in court filings are a common cause of delay.
Are prenuptial and cohabitation agreements enforceable in Alberta?
Yes, when they are properly prepared. Alberta's Family Property Act sets formal requirements, including that each person acknowledges the agreement with independent legal advice. We make sure your agreement meets them.
How is child support calculated?
Child support in Alberta follows the Federal Child Support Guidelines. The base amount depends on the paying parent's income and the number of children, and special expenses such as childcare or activities can be shared on top.
What is the difference between guardianship and parenting time?
Guardianship covers the right to make important decisions for a child, such as health care and education. Parenting time is the time a child spends in each parent's care. Both are decided based on the child's best interests.
Do family law matters always go to court?
No. Many are resolved through negotiation, mediation or collaborative law, which are usually faster and less expensive. We go to court when it is the best way to protect you or your children.
What should I bring to my first consultation?
Any agreements, court documents or correspondence you have, plus a summary of your income, assets and debts. If you don't have everything yet, that's fine. We'll tell you what's needed.
